981964_610422688968780_913358512_oCLOTHING SWAP.
GIRLS ONLY.
BRING AT LEAST 3 ITEMS and a BOTTLE OF WINE.

We are so excited to be hosting our THIRD official She Wore It Anyways clothing swap! Feel free to bring more than 3 items if you want. You can bring clothing and/or accessories. Think shoes, purses, hats, jewelry!

All items that are not swapped will be donated!

A BIG thanks to Morganat Fredonia-Provisions For Women for hosting!

So what should you bring??

1) Only things you are SURE you DO NOT want! There are no indian givers allowed!

2) Bring anything! I have heard so many girls say, “well my stuff is all junk!” SO IS MINE! Listen, ‘one woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure’ has never held so true than at a clothing swap!

3) Bring at least three items but you can definitely bring more! I always end up bringing a garbage bag  or two! (yes, I have an online shopping addiction. I know. I get it.)

4) Come with a great attitude! No fights on record so far! It’s seriously amazes me how each and every time all of the girls who participate are so kind and gentle with one another. Who knows, you might me your new best friend.

THE POLKA FLORA SHUFFLE

Oh man it is good to be back! I had the amazing opportunity to go camping with some of the world’s best photographers in California last week. You should check out #yeahfieldtrip on Instagram to see some of the magic. Photo Field Trip was such an amazing experience filled with inspiration and encouragement but I have to admit I got terribly nervous before I went.

Sitting at the dinning room table with my roommates the night before I left, I admit, I felt sheer panic. It was like that first day of school fear but giant adult size. Even after all of the “she wore it anyways” attitude and coaching I felt like I wouldn’t be good enough. I mean these were the top dogs in my field. Coming from all over the world and here I was, just a silly girl with a camera.

After some serious pep talks from my very tender roomies I haphazardly packed some weird stuff in my backpack and attempted to get some sleep. If I could help you understand what I learned in California and I mean really uunnndddeerrrrSTAND I would give it to each and everyone of you. Though my classes were packed with great information and heard some truly inspirational speakers, the one thing that stands out above the rest is that we are all just people.

That’s right. My big epiphany in California is that people are people. All of these amazing photographers that I was so intimidated by and terrified of meeting were just as insecure, confused and quirky as I am! I heard stories of lose and of failure, of dreams and aspiration, of fears and real struggle. From people I saw online and thought were absolutely invisible. Its amazing how deceiving the internet can be. Even when we don’t mean for it to be that way.

Knowing now that these seemingly super human photographers are just like me has to be one of the most freeing things I have ever come to know. Think of it this way… If Beyonce’s photographer and I can sit on the porch and drink whiskey while talking about socks, anything is possible. I heard time and time again from my teachers in California, that success is relative and that there is no reason I can’t have what they have. So what is holding me back? Fear? RIDICULOUS!

Fear is a construct of distorted lies we surpress ourselves under.

Some absurd idea that they are drinking some kool-aide I can’t afford. THATS BULLSHIT> There is no magical Kool-Aide. It’s the simple mixture of big dreams and tons of hard work.

We are all equipped with the ability to dream and frankly that’s all we really need.

Do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK right now. That’s right you can read it online.  Just think about it… what is that matching silverware really getting you in life?

STOP being afraid. Stop living inside of some self induced box of “can’t”s and “I wish”!

I think its important to have big, fantastic, wild, unbelievable dreams.

GET THRIFTY WITH IT!!

Okay! HOW AWESOME IS THIS??? Deshel is a senior at Howard High School and we think she is really on to something! Last year Deshel won the LAUNCH business competition. You can read more here.

Since prom season is just a around the corner Deshel is collecting gently used prom dress at her store for students to buy on the cheap! So cool right?  She is hosting the Cinderella Event the entire month of March.

Prom dress donations can be dropped off at the The Howard School main office during school hours. 4 Ever Young is located at The Howard School, in the old gymnasium behind the school’s main building. Join us for the Grand Opening on Tuesday, March 11 at 12:00pm, and help us kick off her prom dress drive!

So ladies, start the digging! Who doesn’t need to do a little spring cleaning? Its time to part ways with that old treasure you never wear and let one of the girls at Howard give it a new life!

BORN AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN

Once upon a time… in a land called “Target Has Designer Clothing Lines for Less” I found a Rodarte treasure! This little beauty was so delicate with its tule overlay and lace edged slip. I wanted it so badly but in the years of college and dependents I was simply shit out O’luck. Until the fateful day when I made one of my stress reliever Target runs. I used to love to go, even with no $$$, get a pomegranate slushie at the snack bar in the front and then wonder around for hours. Target was my sanctuary of deep thought and loosing myself. Whilst teeth deep in the 75% OFF rack I found one large Rodarte frock tucked away. A mere $9.44 marked down from who know what. It was mine.

Well just like many things we obsess over and idealize… they never really pan out the way we expect. The seems of the boobies in the slip made my big chest look all funny and well the yellow didn’t do a lot for my complexion but none the less… I have held on to this bad boy for 5 years!

Here I wore it for my sister and I’s college graduation party invites.

After years of it not getting the play time it should have I finally cut the top portion of the slip out. Here Katelynd wore it to BEYONCE.

Then this morning while cleaning my room, I was hanging up some clean clothes and pulled her out again. I just love the dress so much but have only worn it 3 or 4 times ever. Its been worn by others a few times but its just too precious to leave hanging. After trying it on one more time I realized it would make a wonderful skirt. It hurt my heart to cut off the top with those soft luxurious bows but I just don’t wear it the way it is.

So here it is! Bringing new life!

Just when you think there is no hope, look at it from another point of view, make the changes and find new life. (Am I talking clothes or life?)

Happy recycling ladies!

#WCW >>> LAURA HENLEY

In my excitement for Society of the Night I asked Laura Henley to be my #WCW. The crush is real y’all! We started the morning shopping for flowers for tomorrows event, had breakfast at Copacetic Coffee /// The Farmers Daughter  and then played dress up with some of Laura’s treasures!

Jaime >>> Where does your style come from? Any major inspirations? People or eras that excite you?

Laura >>>I’m basically trying to be American Girl Doll Samantha and / or Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden, minus the parental tragedy and weird turn-of-the-century illnesses. Samantha and Mary both lived in these massive haunted houses, were English or sorta English, and did the whole full-body-coverage clothing thing which I’m a huge fan of. Not out of a sense of shame or like I don’t like my skin and my body (I love both!) but because I just think puff sleeves and high necklines are the height of sexy. I also love that in their era messy hair, all-day drawing, hanging out in your attic, and hiking in muslin dresses were their norm. So basically I’m telling you I want to go back to an era where the things I do on a daily basis are considered really OK, not like an adult living a neglectful and wanton life like they seem now, kinda. ALSO everyone had hella cool names like Cordelia and Carmella and Opal.

Disclaimer – I realize this is a super white-girl fantasy.

Jaime >>> Any themes you see coming through in your art and personal style?

Laura >>>  I like flowers a lot. I like to draw them, steal them from my neighbors, wear them, look at them and think about them. But I’ve had to stop just drawing flowers and be like “Okay, Laura, let’s just imagine that the IRL flowers are sitting on a table … what would look cool NEXT to them.” laura henley-19laura henley-30

Jaime >>> So for the shoot you pulled out some real treasures… give us the story! How did you acquire such goodies and what do you love about them?
Laura >>> I love Pinterest because I am a normal person with a pulse. I found that Betsey Johnson dress on Etsy, pinned it, then promptly bought it. And I love going back into my Pinterest and seeing it there because now it’s mine! The cut is very flattering because I have thick limbs and a small waist so… something about the dress is just really small-waist friendly. The black velvet dress is vintage Laura Ashley and I just don’t even have to explain to 80′s babies what it’s like to find brands of your childhood. Not only is this Laura Ashley but it’s like 2 layers of velvet, exposed seams on the inside so I can see how the thing was made, deep pockets, a sweetheart (or princess?) neckline and buttons on the back. It’s just the utmost in tailoring. And I feel like even though it’s heavy black velvet, it could have easily been made in one of those famous 80s oversized florals. I feel like it has a floral heart, ya know.
And I only wear sentimental jewelry. So I only have like 2 pieces of jewelry. My mom gave me both of those necklaces for Christmas this year and I wear at least one of them everyday.
I don’t know how to buy or wear shoes. Just… I don’t. laura henley-27

Jaime >>> THE SHOW >>> What should we expect tomorrow night?
Laura >>> Flowers and lights and my baller glassware. My boyfriend (who is wonderful and just as balls-deep in this event as I am) has been filming this stuff from start to finish and we’re wrapping up a video of the whole thing this afternoon. So that will be there – you can see how the glasses were made! Sort of. I did not blow them which is a questions that people keep asking me and I just really want to know why people think glass blowing is that common? I appreciate that people think I’m so varied in my skills, but I hope the fact that I did not blow 388 piece of glassware doesn’t disappoint anyone. I did, however, screenprint them:)I’m very proud of that. I almost caught my hair on fire doing it and I bled a few times because in my last day of printing, I had tightened parts of the machine a bit too much and it was applying to much pressure to the glass so every like 15th one would explode. It was thrilling. I had to drink a lot last night to calm down from it.
Uh… the show should be like something Samantha or Mary Lennox would have done in their coming-out years (which is a term for girls parading around after puberty, Jane Austen-style but with electricity in all the ballrooms and parlors), which is to say there will be flowers, exposed bulb lights, cocktails, ragtime music (but maybe Drake later or in the women’s bathroom? idk. we can only hope.) and probably a lot of things like branches and hand-made wire chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. I hope I actually make the event.
Get the details on the event here.

Buy tickets here!

This is the good stuff y’all. It’s the people behind an event like this that make me love living Chattanooga.

If you need me tomorrow night, I’ll be dressed to the nines on the 13th floor of the First Tennessee building.

laura henley-18P.S. Yes, I found these in the cabinet at Laura’s house. No, she did not see me take this photo.

Kandice Rose Medina - i already raved about this article on facebook, but it MUST be said again. mere words cannot express how clever and FUN Henley truly is! i always knew she was in my top five “most interestingly articulate” people i know, but this article bumped her up to top two. she’s the best. i cannot wait for tonight!

Allison Kennedy - These shots are AMAZING. I love how she says “without the parental struggles…”

Ben Schnell - I love this article, and Laura and her boyfriend Ken. The shots were all beautiful and I could listen to Laura talk for hours because I never expect to hear what comes out of her mouth but its always something clever and interesting. This post did an amazing job of bringing out her style and personality.
